The Widening Gyre: A Plastic Activist's Story

Surfer and activist Stiv Wilson began his ocean conservation mission by working to ban plastic bags in Oregon and became addicted to the cause. After working to ban other plastic products, he realized that real change won't happen by going after individual plastics – the entire industry must be exposed and disrupted. Stiv is now Executive Producer and Creator of The Story of Plastic, an organization working to create a future without plastic pollution.

This Giant Shark is Made From Plastic Pollution (!)

Meet Sylvia: she's a cheery silvertip shark sculpture created by Washed Ashore, an organization working to raise awareness of the ocean's growing plastic pollution problem. Sylvia, just like each of the 70 pieces made by Washed Ashore, is made from recovered plastic garbage collected from the beaches along Oregon's coast.

Founder and artistic director Angela Haseltine Pozzi decided to name the giant plastic shark after our very own Dr. Sylvia Earle – a nod towards the Mission Blue founder's life work to preserve the world's oceans. Read more about Washed Ashore's missionhere.
