Today, Dr. Sylvia Earle and the Mission Blue Expeditions Team in partnership with Fins Attached set sail for an island Jacques Cousteau considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Located 350 miles off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Cocos Island is a cornerstone of the Eastern Pacific Seascape Hope Spot and boasts a diversity of large pelagics like sharks, rays, tunas, and dolphins. Hammerheads, Galápagos, silky, tiger, white tip reef, and whale sharks are common sightings, making it a haven for scientists, divers, and marine enthusiasts alike. Sharks are essential apex predators that shape the food web and maintain a healthy ecosystem for all marine life. Indeed, you should be scared if you observe an ocean without sharks. Yet something tells us we will have no such problem during this expedition. Cocos Island is one of the sharkiest places on the planet.
Stay tuned for a special Facebook Live broadcast from the dock before heading out on the water!
