Endangered Species Coalition:The straw in your drink is a killer

People,
Plastic pollution is killing our oceans and the creatures that live in them.Scientists have found that 90 percent of the world's seabirds, a third of the sea turtles, and over half of all whales and dolphin species have ingested plastic. Every year, one million birds and 100,000 marine animals die from ingesting plastic waste. Hundreds of other species are harmed by plastic without consuming it.
We can stop this. Much of this plastic is consumer waste from the use of single use plastics like straws, utensils, or plastic bags. Each one of these pieces of deadly pollution is the result of a choice at the point of purchase. I believe in you, Ricardo–you can go without using single use plastics to save marine species.
As a part of the 2018 Endangered Species Day, we are asking activists like you to join us: commit to go one week without single use plastic. Decline the straw (or bring your own),  bring a reusable shopping bag, even carry a fork or other utensils for the week of Endangered Species Day. Your actions will not only keep those plastics out of the oceans, but may inspire others to do the same. When someone asks you why you brought a fork in your bag, tell them! You did it to save species and they ought to as well.
After you have discovered how simple and rewarding it is to opt out of plastic pollution for one week, we hope that you will carry that forward into the future.
Thank you for your commitment to wildlife and wild places.
Sincerely,
Leda Huta
