Indianapolis Prize Finalist!

The movement to protect ocean wildlife and restore balance to our blue planet got a shot in the arm today! The Indianapolis Prize announced Dr. Sylvia Earle as one of six Finalists for the world’s leading award for animal conservation. Hats off to the Indianapolis Zoological Society for recognizing the critical importance of Dr. Earle's message to safeguard ocean wildlife, and in doing so preserve a planet that works in our favor.

"The Indianapolis Prize Finalists are consistent winners in the ongoing battles to save threatened species," said Michael I. Crowther, chief executive officer of the Indianapolis Zoological Society, Inc., which administers the Indianapolis Prize as one of its signature global conservation initiatives. "By telling the stories of their heroism and victories, the Indianapolis Prize aims to inspire more people to work for a planet that future generations will be happy to inherit, rather than be forced to endure."

From Dr. Earle's Desk...

"Given that an estimated 90 percent of the globe's fisheries are at capacity or depleted, might there be a further analysis of threats imposed by the impact of legal fishing as well as the impact of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) extraction of ocean wildlife?

Current fisheries policies globally continue to reflect a lop-sided view of the value of life in the sea as infinitely renewable ("sustainable") commodities, and that also reflect significant political override of scientific evidence about the amount that can be taken without serious disruption to exploited populations and to vital ocean processes."
