Dear folks,
This time of year, it seems like it’s all about the turkeys.
But it’s another American icon, the greater sage-grouse, that we need your help to save.
The sage-grouse is best known for its elaborate mating dance – each spring, the males can be seen strutting, fanning their impressive tail feathers and chortling an incredibly unique, bubbly song to attract females.
They’re fascinating, and they’re in trouble. In fact, sage-grouse populations have declined by more than 90 percent from historical levels!
And now, the Trump administration, eager to open more public land to fossil fuel extraction and other development, is attempting to tear apart existing sage-grouse conservation plans - the same plans produced after years of hard work and collaboration by hundreds of stakeholders and that have the strong support of key western governors.
The administration’s proposed changes could eliminate common-sense protections for huge swaths of sage-grouse habitat, threatening grouse and other wildlife, as well as the local communities and economies that depend on healthy sagebrush grasslands.
Rather than weaken sage-grouse and sagebrush conservation, the administration should consider ways to improve the current federal strategy to conserve this vital ecosystem.
Reducing protections for the sage-grouse is just another prong in the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to expand oil and gas drilling on America’s public lands.
Thank you for all you do,
