Scientific articles, activism and awareness in the preservation and maintenance of the environment and species in their natural habitats for the balance of ecosystems.
Dear folks,
Burdensome. Unnecessary. Ineffective.
It is astounding and outrageous that Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke would use these words to describe the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and other protections for wildlife and their habitat.
Zinke, whose department has primary responsibility for overseeing the implementation of the ESA and is charged with managing most of our nation’s public lands, sees wildlife protections as little more than barriers to profit.
Empowered by President Trump, last week Secretary Zinke laid out his strategy to make America’s public lands a stomping ground for fossil fuel and mineral developers.
The report – fueled by greed and special interests – would greenlight the destruction of wildlife habitat, skew environmental impact analyses to favor corporate interests and promises a “review” of ESA protections.
Let that sink in.
The head of the federal agency overseeing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is concerned that environmental safeguards are unfair to the oil and gas industry, believes that imperiled wildlife is a roadblock to development and considers the ESA to have "far-reaching negative impacts on energy production."
Although he may claim otherwise, wildlife doesn’t seem to matter to Ryan Zinke, and that is frightening.
Wildlife deserves better.
Sincerely,
