Join us as we explore the unknown and poorly known deepwater areas north of the Hawaiian Islands!

From September 6 - 30, 2017, the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer will be exploring deepwater areas of the Musicians Seamounts, a 650 nautical mile seamount chain just north of the Hawaiian Islands and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument

Discoveries within the Musicians Seamounts will lead to better understanding of deep-sea coral habitats, fish populations, and the unique geologic history of the region. Data collected during this expedition will also help to inform future management decisions in the area.
The Deep-Sea Symphony: Musicians Seamounts expedition team will characterize this area using the ship's high resolution multibeam sonarmapping system, the 6,000-meter remotely operated vehicle, Deep Discoverer, and a high-bandwidth satellite connection for real-time ship-to-shore communications.

An Exploration for Educators webpage includes information for educators about why we are exploring this region, standards-based lessons, videos, topical theme pages and much more!

Educators, students and the general public will be able to follow along and watch this expedition unfold online in real-time from September 7-29, 2017, from about 8 am to 5 pm HST.
