The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research invites educators and other interested parties to a webinar to introduce the science and the associated educational resources available for the upcoming 2017 Deep-Sea Symphony: Exploring the Musician Seamounts Expedition.

For the past three years, the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer has been conducting expeditions in the central and western Pacific Ocean as part of a major multi-year effort called the 'Campaign to Address Pacific monument Science, Technology, and Ocean NEeds (CAPSTONE)'. The Deep-Sea Symphony: Exploring the Musician Seamounts expedition, taking place September 6-30, 2017, is the last of this Campaign.

A largely unexplored 650 nautical mile seamount chain makes up the Musicians Seamounts, located northwest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Exploring this seamount chain provides opportunity to better understand fish populations and habitats in the area, genetic diversity of deep water coral species, and the geologic complexity of the seafloor, as well as to characterize organisms living within the water column.

Scientists will explore these unique habitats using multibeam sonar, the NOAA remotely operated vehicle, Deep Discoverer, and other tools and sensors. Telepresence will enable explorers onboard to collaborate with scientists participating remotely from shore, and educators, students and the public can follow along and watch this expedition unfold in real-time via the internet.

This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to the expedition and associated education products, including standards-based lessons and other resources available online.
