NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research announces The DEEP Sea Exploration to Advance Research on Coral/Canyon/Cold seep Habitats (DEEP SEARCH), September 11-28, 2017

Join us as we explore the poorly known deepwater ecosystems off of North Carolina and Georgia!

The DEEP Sea Exploration to Advance Research on Coral/Canyon/Cold seep Habitats (DEEP SEARCH)program is a multi-year,interagency study that will focus on the exploration and investigation of deepwater biological communities in U.S. federal waters of the northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Deep-sea habitats along the U.S. continental margin host complex, rugged seafloor features that include submarine canyons, cold seeps, and deep-sea coral forests. These ecosystems support biologically diverse communities that are poorly understood.

From September 11 - 28, 2017, ocean scientists will use a combination of mapping, water column profiling and sampling to improve knowledge of the geology of the region, the types of communities found on the seafloor, and the mid-water communities that interact with them.

An Exploration for Educators webpage includes information for educators about why we are exploring this region, standards-based lessons, videos, topical theme pages and much more!
