Anti-wildlife members of Congress have been trying to open the Arctic Refuge up for drilling for more than 30 years.
And for 30 years Defenders has fought to protect this unique landscape.
Last week the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget resolution that paves the way for allowing drilling in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and a similar measure has passed out of the Senate Budget Committee.
Politicians know that the vast majority of the American public is opposed to oil and gas development in one of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth, so instead of being honest about their intentions, they’re using the budget process to sneak in approval for drilling in the Arctic Refuge’s Coastal Plain and hoping that you and I won’t notice.
The budget process is complicated – separate measures must be approved by the House and the Senate, and then it’s up to various committees to "find the money" requested in the budget resolution. Key congressional committees are eager to do that by selling out wildlife and opening up the Arctic Refuge for oil drilling. It is then up to Congress to pass final budget legislation to enact the proposals made by their various committees.
The Arctic Refuge is a place of unparalleled beauty that supports a vast array of unique and imperiled wildlife – from polar bears and brown bears, to musk oxen, wolves and arctic foxes. It is also the principal calving grounds for the Porcupine Caribou herd, one of North America’s largest caribou herds.
Wildlife should not be a bargaining chip.
