This Ancient Pagan Ritual Transforms Men Into Monsters
Each January, men of a small village in the mountains of Sardinia put on sharp-hewn wooden masks and robes of heavy copper bells to parade through the street in observance of a midwinter holiday. Men wearing the costumes of mamuthones embody darkness, the kingdom of the dead, and the ties between shepherds and sheep, while the red-garbed issohadores dance around them like the bonfires lit throughout the town to invite spring’s return. This ritual is over two thousand years old, its origins shrouded in mystery—it’s a fascinating reminder of the power of communal memory to keep history alive.

A Lion Learns the Hard Way Not to Hunt Cars
You never know what you’re going to see on a safari. That was especially true in this case when a curious lion approached a caravan of cars in Kruger National Park, South Africa. The curious cat, much to the delight of the children in a car close by, nibbled inquisitively on the car tire until it popped! Seeing as nobody was injured, this was a very fun video to work on.

Get to Know the Giant Panda
Growing from tiny, helpless cubs into large, adorable bamboo eaters, giant pandas are perhaps the most iconic species in the field of wildlife conservation. As this video reveals, a panda’s life revolves around bamboo even more than you might think. Their diet may even explain why pandas have black and white fur, a question that has long puzzled scientists. While recent years have brought good news for giant pandas’ conservation status in the wild, the future of pandas and the bamboo they rely on remains in jeopardy.

This Mysterious Lake Blob
Looks Like a Brain
Ask someone to name an animal found in Canada, and you're not likely to get the response, "Bryozoans, of course!" I couldn't have told you what a bryozoan looked like, until reports came in of brain-shaped aquatic animals, found in Vancouver's Lost Lagoon. Despite the ominous name, the lagoon itself is rather pleasant in this footage from Martha Perkins of the Vancouver Courier. And the bryozoans—while strange to look at—won't hurt you, either.

A Sneak Peek of Jane Goodall's Life, Shown Like Never Before
Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage tucked away in the National Geographic archives for over 50 years, award-winning director Brett Morgen tells the story of JANE, a trailblazer whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. Set to a rich orchestral score from legendary composer Philip Glass, the film offers an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Jane Goodall.
